Share your own memories, photos and experiences with the rest of us, and reminisce. Below is a post from one of our more senior members who joined recently…

“Hello everyone. I am new to this wonderful site and just want to fill you in on my background. I was born in CHURCHDOWN ROAD way back in 1940. I think l went to WINSTONE road, then GRANT road schools. A lot of my leisure time was spent playing in Dovecot park. We would go when the police opened the gates in the morning and stay until he CLOSED them again at dusk. We would take a lemonade bottle full of water and jam sandwiches, which would keep us going until tea time. Most of the time was spent at the lake, fishing with our home made nets (a cane with the foot of a nylon stocking threaded through a ring of wire). We loved to fish for tiddlers, putting them in a jam jar to take home and brag about! Remember the island on the lake? There was a wasps nest there and many a time we would end up at the CHEMIST where they put calamine lotion on our badly stung legs, now that was service for you, there would be A hefty charge now days. We always manage to get our socks soaking wet as the water used to go down our wellies as we waded out. Who could forget the summer shows at the back of the park, mostly watched through the railings when you didn’t have the 3d entrance fee. I liked MR MAGIC the best and also the talent shows. Dad used to play BOWLS, so many Sunday afternoons were spent helping to retrieve the bowls from the gutter. I have so many wonderful memories to share.
