Today I found myself catching a bus to Green Lane/Tuebrook (Prescot Road end), and walking along in the sunlight, just enjoying the morning… I was off to find an old disused Victorian Jewish Cemetery, mentioned in some Liverpool History Books.
I had located it on Google Earth, and could see it was in between St. Cecillia’s Church and a local primary school. Experience has told me, that disused cemeteries are usually full, and as so, once a generation has passed, they are then closed to the public… This looks like the case in this lost Liverpool Cemetery…. blink and you’ll miss it…. many locals don’t even know of its existence.
It was sad to see, the neglect of decades, to this seemingly insignificant piece of local history. Besides a few tombstones completely covering and obscuring themselves with ivy, you could be easily fooled that this plot of land, once belonged to a great house which must have been demolished over time, leaving the plot to return to nature.
After taking the above shots, I happened to walk down the path which runs between St. Cecillia’s and the Cemetery to see if I could gain a better vantage point to the back end of the cemetery, alas I could not…
However, I did happen across a Disabled Adults Home (L’Arche) situated at the the end of the Lane and behind St. Cecillia’s Church… A lady passing me in a car, stopped to see what I was doing, and asked if I would possibly take photos for a Garden Party they were hosting on 12th April 2015, to raise funds for a sensory garden in their grounds.
Sadly, I will be away on that date, however, I told her I would arrange for a photographer from my own Photographic Society (SLPS) to attend, and this has been done….
I really hope they have a good turnout for this worthwhile event. The cost is a mere £2, and that includes a BBQ + drink…. and the time…. 12:30-15:00.
Another brilliant shot!
Thanks for supplying above information, even though it was written 2yrs ago, our Mum is 92 and has lived in Brainerd St, next to Lister Dr, for over 30yrs and did not know that Jewish Cemetery existed, I will make a point of looking again at the weekend when my sister and I go to our Mums.
Val… thanks for stopping by… and taking time to comment….
Regards Mal xxx
thank you for this information. I will be in Liverpool in June and had hoped to visit the cemetery. I have at least one triple great uncle buried there.
Kerrie did you ever visit the Cemetery on your Visit ?
Valerie Davis, did you go to Bankfield girls school or Lister Drive ? Joan Jackson
I went to St Cecilias RC school in the 1970s and walked past this cemetery every day.
Our dining hall was at the end of the lane in between the church and the cemetery. Which you mentioned is now a facility for disabled adults.
So many memories.
Thanks for the photos.
