A day on Capri

The Boat to Capri

A long awaited, re-visit to Capri, was one of the highlights of our recent holiday break to Sorrento. After, a leisurely breakfast in our Hotel, we made our way up the short walk to the road entrance. As we walked up we noticed a Humming Bird Hark Moth, taking nectar from the flowers on the way up… upon arriving we caught the coach, down to Capri Harbour to catch the boat over to the Island.

The Newly restored ‘Elephant Rock’

After arriving at Capri, our guide offered us all an extra excursion… a private boat trip around the Isle, which called at a few grotto’s (not the blue), and gave a good commentary of the houses residents of note who lived on the Isle both past and present, a really good way to start the days events and while away an hour in a relaxing fashion.

After the boat tour we, boarded our small coaches to drive the scenic coastal road up and over, to Anacapri, a small town on the upper reaches of the Isle.

The Coastal Road to Anacapri

Arriving at Anacapri, there were a number of places we could have visited, but as Ann and I had been there before, we headed up the chairlift to the Summit of Mt. Solaro, the highest point on the island, in order to spend a couple of hours, chilling and taking in the views. Although we had planned to have lunch on the summit at the Cafe, we knew was there… we could only rustle up a large packet of crisps each and a couple of small bottles of wine or two…lol.

The Cafe in 2003

Looking back at our photos of 2003, it was now obvious to us how the cafe had expanded during the time since our last visit. We sat at one of the tables and mused over the amount of oriental visitors, who take the lift, take a photo, then return as quick as they had arrived… Nick & Linda P. joined us on the summit soon after we had arrived, and spent the hours with us, enjoying the warmth and views of the day… a most relaxing time.

In time for the coaches down from Anacapri, to the main town of Capri, we set off down the chairlift… it was great going up the mountain. but the views going down were absolutely stunning, if I hadn’t have had that other bottle of wine, I would have been tempted to get the camera out of my bag, but decided against it in the end lol.

The guide took us to the main town when we arrived in our coaches, to do a bit of shopping, however, Ann and I slipped off on our own to grab that all important coffee, and a cake, before we all met back at the coach stop, for the return journey for joining our ferry for the return trip back to Sorrento.

Capri to the Island of Ischia

Another great day out, but once again it would have been nicer to spend longer on the island and visit more sites like the the Dr Axel Munthe House at Anacapri, and the Gardens of Augustus… Perhaps another visit for another time, catching an early morning ferry, and coming back later in the day ???
