Venice for the Carnivale (2017)

As many of you know, I started my passion with Venice in the early 1980’s, when I was a young man, backpacking around Europe, in the time when each European country still had their own forms of currency… if memory has me… 1000 lire was worth about 50p in British currency (GBP) so I could have been a millionaire in Italy for £25,000…

After my backpacking days in the dormitories of various Youth Hostels, I married Ann, and we took a break, from Venice (she had been independently) so in August 2003, we took Catherine to experience the delights of Europe on a Coach Holiday for 15 days, which mainly explored Italy, and we subsequently visited Venice as part of that trip. Ann and I have returned every year (bar the odd one) every since.

One of the festivals of Venice has always alluded me… This being ‘Venice Carnivale‘ because of teaching commitments. However, this year I changed my role withing the College where I work, to that of an on-site assessor, after 12 years of teaching, which allows me more flexibility, as far as holidays are concerned… This being the case, Ann encouraged me to go to Carnivale this year, with a photography friend (Martin R.  M.B.E.) the President of the S.L.P.S. so we flew into Venice with our camera equipment on 20/02/17 for a 5 day visit… I have to say… “what a stunningly different experience” and I thought I KNEW Venice…lol.
