Took a walk around the city the other Sunday with Ann (my wife) …. The morning weather was a ‘blue sky’ day, and the light level were great, I decided to travel ‘light’ so chose my Fuji X100 to accompany me…
We took a no.10a bus from Pagemoss to Liverpool City centre, and got off at Islington opposite T.J. Hughes, of course back in the day, this was considered by many as the city centre. However, nowadays the centre is seen to be a lot closer to the River. I include a ‘small’ selection of the images of the day…
We walked down Islington to Lime street passing many of ‘Olg’ Liverpool’s iconic shops, pubs and buildings. It was sad to see the old ‘Odeon’ picture house, now demolished and the steel structure of a new building being erected, I’m sure many of us have fond memories of the ‘Odeon cinema’ especially in our ‘courting’ days and beyond. After passing ‘Paddy’s Bar’ we turned right…. in front of us was the old Liverpool Court Buildings and on the right, is the new Amicus H.Q. on Commutation Row.
We did a quick about turn, and headed down William Brown Street past St.George’s Hall with St.James’s Gardens at the rear of the Hall, and past the old ‘County Sessions Court House’, The Walker Art Gallery, The William Brown Library, Liverpool Museum, and the University Buildings at the end…
Passing in front of the entrance to the Kingsway Mersey Tunnel, we swung around to the left and headed up Manchester Street, here we saw the ever changing face of Liverpool…
Once we reached the end of the ‘flyover’ on Dale Street, and progressed up Hatton Gardens past the old Merseyside Passenger Transport Offices, (now used for another purpose) and on to Marylebone, which over recent years has changed dramatically…
As we walked down Tithebarn Street on our way for a well deserved Costa coffee (those who know us on a personal basis know how we tend to steer ourselves from one Coffee shop to another) on our way we passed one of the most colourful pubs in the City….
After coffee, we headed into Exchange flags, and were surprised to see the Town Hall wrapped up and scaffolding erected all over the rear…
We decided to head down to the River, past India Buildings and down Dale Street, passing through Moor Square to see the Tipping Bucket Water Feature (I remember my father taking me and my brothers there in the early 60’s)…
After passing through Moore Square, we made our way past the old White Star Building on the corner of The Strand/James St, and down to Mann Island and passed the new Museum of Liverpool Life at the Pier Head. Ann came up with the idea of us taking a trip on the Ferry. Back in the day you caught Ferries from the Pier Head to the three main Wirral Ferry landing stages at Birkenhead, Seacombe and New Brighton and back, However the New Brighton landing stage went many years ago, leaving the other two still active. Due to operational needs, the Ferries now do ’round trips’ leaving the Pier Head Landing Stage and progressing in an anti-clockwise direction, to call at Seacombe then Birkenhead and back to the Pier Head.
