Venice’s outer reaches

San Georgia Maggior from San Zaccaria

On my fifth day in Venice… I decided to give the masks a miss, for a morning shoot, and board one of the boat-busses (no.1) to the Lido. My plan was to visit one of the parts of Venice, which visitors, rarely get to see, but can throw up some stunning imagery, if you know where to look… so after breakfast in my hotel, I ventured out to St. Marks, and mopped up some mask models on the way to the bus stop.

And so, I made my way over to the Lido… before catching the road bus, I went for a coffee in one of Ann & I’s regular coffee shops, before catching the road bus, to Palestina. this bus travels the full length of the Lido, then boards, a car/bus ferry, for the short hop onto Lido’s second Isle… at the end of the Isle, the bus passed the fishing village of Palestrina, and terminated at the cemetery… and the bus-boat stop to Chiogga.

The cemetery, is a rather unremarkable one, with its grey sand bed, and row upon row on plots, with a few family crypts around the outer boundary walls. However, what is more important to a man of my advancing years… I know that all Italian cemeteries,  have a public access WC, free of charge…lol.

As I walked at the back of the cemetery, beyond its boundary walls and along its single tracks, which I knew would lead me to new sights and imagery, explored by only the very few who venture this far… as I passed by old and derelict buildings, which had so obviously, fallen to the passing of time, and the decline of Venice’s fishing industries, the only inhabitants nowadays, are destruction’s of feral cats… which don’t allow you to get close… and secretly peer from secretive vantage points…

Walking further… I came upon the ancient fishing stands, which ‘rights’ are passed down, from generation to generation… these sparse stands, dotted around this secretive part of the lagoon, look totally out of place, in the modern world of today… methinks another visit is needed as there is much more to see, but the day was just too short…lol.
